They were sufficiently paid already and so they do not need any more money as it is what they are
supposed to be doing because the state tells them to do it. Salomon’s House is an institution that the
Bensalemites use to “study the works and creatures of God”, make scientific discoveries, and conduct
research. It got its name from the king of the Hebrews. Some discoveries include: learning how to make
artificial rainbows, heats similar to the Sun’s heat, medicines, nourishing waters, perfect creatures,
customizing creatures, customizing fruits imitations of weather conditions, Water of Paradise (improves
health and prolongation of life).
These discoveries bring about a question of how knowledge impacts power and the people in power/the
people being controlled by the powerful. Power can be used to create peace or it can be used to breed
corruption. The struggle of a few people having so much knowledge is that they can use that power over
other people and the people of Bensalem would definitely have to make some political trade-offs to have
the benefit of the knowledge of the few. Knowledge someone possesses could easily be held over the
head of a naive person in order for political or social gain. The people of Bensalem rely heavily on the
few who make discoveries for them and must have trust that they are being relayed information correctly,
this causes a type of obedience to the knowledgeable state.
