On April 12, 2018, two African/American men were arrested at a Starbucks in an
upscale downtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Their “crime” was not ordering
anything while they waited for a friend to arrive to conduct a business meeting.
As a result of this occurrence, Howard Shultz, the Executive Chairman of
Starbucks, sent the attached email to Starbucks card holders.
Writing Assignment:
You are a diversity consultant. One of your clients had a similar event occur in
one of their stores. They are interested in your evaluation of Starbucks
response, and they want your advice on how they should respond.
Considering such things as legal issues, customer reactions, and financial
impact, provide your client a response by answering the following in three to four
double-spaced pages.
1) Briefly describe the occurrence in the Starbucks.
2) Provide your evaluation of the Starbucks response.
3) Recommend a response that your client might take.
Your paper should be 3-4 double-spaced pages in length. Make sure you do
your best quality writing. I will base 80% on content, 10% on paper organization,
and 10% on grammar and punctuation.
