Composers have timelessly utilised their texts as a medium to illustrate distinct images of
individual’s perspective of the world. These images allow individuals to interpret the texts in unique
and evocative ways and question their perspective. These ideas are evident in the short stories, “The
Drover’s Wife” and “The Loaded Dog” by Henry Lawson, which explores the hardships encountered
in the bush and their surrounding environment. Furthermore, the picture book, “The Watertower
by Gary Crew, portrays the distinctive images of a small isolated town and the mysterious effect of
the water on the towns people which help offer different perspectives of the world. Therefore, both
texts effectively offer a poignant insight into the difficult lives of the people within the composer’s
society, through the visual image painted. Thus, it allows the audiences to question the paradigms,
values and ideologies of humanity and gain a renewed perspective of the world.
Literature has the immense power to move individuals by creating strong vivid images of the
hardships and isolation of the town, which offer a variety of perspectives of the world. The short
story, “The Drover’s Wife” thoroughly explores the bush women’s hardships encountered in the
bush and her experiences without a male figure. The harsh and unsettling scene of the bush where
the bush women lives is evident in the vivid imagery of “bush all round- bush with no horizon, for
the country is flat. No ranges in the distance” explores the secluded, lifeless environment in the
Australian outback. The repetition of “no” and “bush” creates an environment with no sense of
civilisation as the bush is depicted as boring, which conveys the weariness of the bush, hence adding
to the image of desolation. The image also allows individuals to challenge their perception of the
bush and visualise the harsh environment encountered by the bush women through the distinctive
images created. The bush women’s hopes and dreams were destroyed living in the bush through the
