After reading our assigned reading it was evident that, Jung believes that the shadow is
an unknown dark side of the personality and it can be both an instinctive and irrational, as
well as prone to what is considered “Psychological Projection” It can also be viewed as a
perception of a personal inferiority being recognized as a moral deficiency in others (Olson et
al., 2020).
To continue, I have a three year old and we watch quite a bit of children’s movies and
find myself looking at the deeper meanings in each show and movie. I found Mr. Incredible
one and two to be very interesting on several different psychological levels. The books states
that “The shadow is the darkest, deepest part of the psyche.” (Olson et al., 2020) As for Mr.
Incredible’s shadow you can see the projection of hyper independence and a little bit of a
“dark side” in both movies (lets focus on Incredible’s one though) in the first movie Mr.
Incredible tells “buddy, to go home he works alone”. This is showing a projection of
insecurities or a complex of how he does it better than anyone else. Later in the movie, he
then works at and Insurance Company where he is fired for blowing his cover because he
couldn’t battle his feelings with in because he has a “super hero complex” Which would be an
example of him seeing a moral defieceny in his boss who told him to not help his customers.
Mr. incredible also listens to police scanners as he struggles to battle his shadow trying to
relive the “glory days which is an example of being fixated on the past in turn which limits his
mental and emotional growth. Additionally, he is pulled by his inner ego to follow his
