If the world/universe is a rational, orderly place, why is it so messed up? Of course this begs the
question "Is the world messed up?" Feel free to argue that it's not.
From our first lecture, we get a scope of the time frame we will be reading about in this
class; from Classical Literature to The Enlightenment to Contemporary Literature. This literature
change is influenced by the people that write it and in which era they write the work(s) and also
their surroundings. In the ancient times of Classical Literature, people knew the answers; at
least most didn't dwell on the questions too much; they mostly believed in a God that created
the Earth and all of the living beings on Earth. Most literature works were based on this belief
system and wrote about it. As times changed, the literature works also changed, and new types of
writing works emerged, e.g. fiction, fables, fantasy, nonfiction, and mentalities, too. The
literature changed, but did the world change because of this twist in mentalities, and does that
make the world a messed up place?
As new forms of literature came into being and time rushed on, new forms of beliefs
started to emerge. During the Age of Reason, or The Enlightenment era, many philosophers,
writers, leaders of the time who imagined they had some grasp of universal order but who
found rational behavior overshadowed by war, cruelty, political and religious turmoil. This
means that as the times went by, new ideas started to come up about the world and universe, and
with new ideas come also conflicts, such as wars and the transfer of power, as in the 17th
century. Before these conflicts came explorations; after the Enlightenment Era, in the 15th and
16th centuries, came Copernicus' recognition that our system is heliocentric not geocentric,
