Nowadays, schools and teachers are more likely to put their energy and attention on
student’s academic writing progresses and improvement, However, I believe that the
discourse community and discourse writing is also an indispensable section for students to
participate in. Because when people participate some discourse communities, they will be
able to understand what kind of language is going to be used, how grammar and format of
writing is going to be used and what sort of certain knowledge is going to be mentioned
and involved during their writing processes. Once people understand the concept of
discourse community and begin to apply it to their writing, they will see a rise in the
effectiveness of their writing immediately. Then people can begin to make further
decisions about every aspect of their writing from different work. During this period of
time, grammars and constructions of writing should be concerned which is in order to
present and polish the writing more understandable.
“What is a discourse community?” people may ask. In terms of the articles and sources I
found, the general definition of discourse community would be “a group of people who
communicate and discuss about a mutual objective, or a group of people who share their
own interests of a specific topic, and eventually people will try to achieve those goals they
have via the discussion” (Patil, 1). Also the discourse community is known as A set of
people who use a common language for interaction is known as a discourse community.
Conceptually, it serves as a convergence of linguistics and social science such as,
anthropology. Such communities are defined by the discourse on commonly shared aims
and objectives of the people within it. Owing to their versatile and intangible nature,
discourse communities operate in forums where the community members participate in a
preferred manner. According to the varied interests and goals held by people, it is possible
for an individual to belong to more than one such discourse community, where he/she may
find like-minded individuals striving for the same end result. These people can move back
and forth within these multiple communities every day.
Discourse communities are all around us. For myself, I was involved with 2 different
discourse communities during my high school years. Even now I am still benefiting from
it, I can still remember that I joined a discourse writing department, I shared my own
experience that I won my first gold medal of my life in a 100 meters racing of my high
