The company I chose to research was Walmart. It is a company that is well known and
has many locations around the world. Known as a large corporation, I thought it would be
interesting to know how the financial aspect of the company would look.
Cash is defined as currency and demand deposits or money that is available on demand at
a financial institution. Cash equivalents are short-term highly liquid investments that will mature
within three months or less (Kieso, et al, 2013). According to this definition, Walmart considers
investments with a maturity when purchased of three months or less to be cash equivalents.
Walmart had cash and cash equivalents of $7.8 billion in 2013 and $6.6 billion in 2012, the bulk
of which-- $5.2 billion in 2013 and $5.6 billion in 2012, was held outside of the U.S. and are
