Diabetic Ketoacidosis
1. Purpose
The purpose of writing this document is to present a case study of a patient related to diabetic
ketoacidosis disease. Here we have discussed briefly the disease itself, its signs and symptoms,
course of treatment and mainly the nursing interventions regarding this disease. This document
clearly explains the nursing interventions and implications to deal with the patients suffering
from diabetic ketoacidosis. Then this case study explains complete nursing care plan for the
patients dealing with diabetic ketoacidosis, followed by evaluation and conclusion.
2. Introduction
This case study is based on rising cases of diabetic ketoacidosis. This disease is a fatal and
alarming disease because most of the patients lose their lives. The cases of diabetic ketoacidosis
are rising and difficult to deal. So, nursing interventions and implications matter a lot in the
treatments of this disease. In this disease the glucose level of the body decreases up to low level
and cause the breakdown of ketones. The body becomes acidic and causes extreme destruction
and hence it is life threatening disease. (Mirsa, S; Oliver, NS, 2015)
3. Chief Complaints
The patient came for examination was characterized by breathing problem, high acidity, and pain
in abdomen.
4. Physical examination
In the additional examination, the patient went through following physical examination;
• Blood pressure of patient was checked.
• Heart rate of patient was checked.
• Sugar level of the patient was checked.
• Temperature of the patient was checked.
5. Diagnosis
After checking the sugar level and acidity of the body, the reports revealed that the acidity of the
body was very high and sugar level was extreme low. Hence, the patient was diagnosed of
diabetic ketoacidosis. The patient was admitted and treatment was started followed by nursing
interventions and care plan.
