Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to estimate the volume taken up by one molecule of stearic acid
and the volume of a film consisting of a monolayer of stearic acid. In this experiment, we are
able to determine the number of molecules on the surface of the water. Using the density of the
stearic acid solution ( ) and the molar mass of stearic acid (284.48 g/mol), we are able.85 g/cm03
to calculate Avogadro’s number.
