“Desiree’s Baby”
In the short story “Desiree’ Baby” Chopin tries to make comment on the “racial consciousness”
of the society in question. Racial consciousness was aimed at defining what is unique, separate in
the “Louisiana Creole” society. In this regard, this society considered each race to be having
specific attributes. For example, the Blacks were seen to have born to serve the master whereby
they worked as slaves in the plantations. In addition, this society put one race in an advanced
social ranking because it was considered to be superior to the others. The skin of a person
basically defined the social status of that person. In this regard, the whites were considered to be
superior to the blacks and the people who had a black pigmentation usually worked in the fields
and they belonged to a lower social class. Although Armand’s mother is of black origin he tries
as much as possible to conceal this fact by not associating himself with the people who were
