Democracy in America
In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to the United States to study American society as
well as the country’s religious, political, and economical character. In 1835, he used the
knowledge he obtained while in America to write a book called Democracy in America. This
book explained why democracy was becoming successful in America while it had failed
everywhere else. Many European citizens were intrigued by the development of the American
government and this book gave them a glance at what had made American democracy
