Democracy refers to a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose
the people who will govern them according to Macmillan Dictionary. Recently, it has been
discussed if real democracy is possible or not. However, real democracy is only possible in
countries where there is economic stability and educated voters.
There is a common belief that uneducated people can not know or decide what is better.
Due to lack of education, uneducated voters are more easily swayed by propaganda,
promises and campaigns. They can not decide which the right option for their own sake is.
To illustrate, in Turkey there are many people who are not educated and not being aware of
anything happens in their country and most of them give their votes unconsciously.
There should be an economic stability to provide real democracy. Vast differences in living
standards results in divergent values. Differences in living standards prevent people from
making impartial decisions. For example, even if a poor person does not support the
government, he/she continues to choose the same government owing to the fact that the
government gives them wages in every month. Whereas, people who have high living
standards provide real democracy since they ado not concern about democracy.
