Introduction of Policy
a. The policy is parental/bonding leave.
b. An example of this policy implemented is at Microsoft as it influences parental leave
policies in the United States. The company implements parental leave by offering a
whopping five months of paid leave to all new birth mothers, and a generous three
months for fathers, adoptive parents, and foster parents (NBCNews.com). They are re-
defining parental leave not only in their own organization but other companies as well by
only partnering with suppliers and vendors who offer a twelve-week minimum parental
leave, for either adoptive or birth parents (NBCNews.com). Meaning, that even if a
supplier or contractor just wants to work with Microsoft, they are required to offer paid
parental leave to their employees. This leads to a major accountability held in
organizations for parental/bonding leave.
c. The intended purpose of paid parental leave is to enable the employee to care for and
bond with a newborn or a newly adopted or newly placed child. Along “for the birth or
placement of a son or daughter, to bond with a newborn or newly placed son or daughter,
or to care for a son or daughter with a serious health condition (U.S. Department of Labor
Wage and Hour Division).”
