Defining Marriage
Marriage can be seen as a sacred commitment between two people that are in love
with each other and are willing to lay bare their love to people. According to the National Center
for Health statistic, about 2.23 million marriages went on in the United States in 2005. That
means that a man and a woman were allowed to get married legally in front of friends and family
to demonstrate their love for one another. Not many people have the right to marry whom they
want in life. Same sex marriage has become such a big issue because people see that they are
being treated unfair against their rights. America is all about equal opportunity, but not when it
comes to marriage. Many people might have different opinions what marriage means or what it
should consist of. In the Defense of Marriage Act, marriage is define as a legal union between
one man as well as one woman as husband and wife. The current definition of marriage is
inadequate for the reason that a person should have the right to choose whom they want to marry,
male or female, homosexuals should have the same equal opportunity as everyone else in this
country.
Gay marriage is such a hot topic that it has been in everyone’s mind during the 2012
election. People are starting to understand how it is unfair for homosexuals cannot get married.
Both our presidential candidates have different opinions on same sex marriage. When NBC
Rosas 2
News interviewed the president about same sex marriage he explained how soldier who are
fighting for America should not feel constrained because they cannot marry someone who is their
same gender. Obama explained his view and why he changed his position from supporting civil
union to supporting of full marital right for homosexuals. Obama feels like everyone should
have the same equal opportunity when getting married. On the other hand his opponent does not
have the same point of view as him. Mitt Romney also went on a television interview with
CNN new stating that he does not believe inn same sex marriage. He believes that marriage
consist of a male and a female. He also explained how he believes that homosexuals should have
the same human rights as other American, but just not pertaining marriage. Same gender
marriage is a highly controversial topic that has been in people’s minds, not just to homosexuals
but to the other people, during this 2012 election.
