Defenders of Wildlife is a nonprofit conservation organization that focuses on protecting and preserving
nature throughout America. Defenders of Wildlife’s mission is to try to create smart policies using science
to maintain, preserve, restore wildlife on land or water. Their main focus is national lands/waters and
some public ones that are important to wildlife. Another of their focuses are private lands with ownership.
They try to partner and teach these private owners or tribes how to help with protecting nature and its
inhabitants. One of the organization’s notable work is when they partnered with the Bureau of Land
Management and others to create a 10-million-acre land management plan in California. This was to
combat and reduce wildfire risk and water quality which is a big issue currently in California. The main
organization is currently headquartered in Washington, D.C., with other offices all over the U.S., for
example, Alaska and California. Defenders of Wildlife was founded in 1947, and their early years they
focused on just preserving wildlife but have now included more such as land. Although the Defenders of
Wildlife are throughout the U.S., they have major competitors such as The Wilderness Society and
Greater Yellowstone Coalition. The Wilderness Society focuses on preserving and restoring nature but
also focuses on acknowledging indigenous people and the mistreatment they have had. The Greater
Yellowstone Coalition believes Greater Yellowstone is a place that must be preserved and treated with
care. They focus on protecting it such as from it being gold-mined and connecting it to other areas such
as The Northern Rockies.
