A decision changes everything. One small decision can alter thousands of things in the
future. In the book “Night” decisions control life or death. That one little thing can change
everything. Elie had to make many important decisions throughout his journey in the
concentration camps, some of which he will never forgive himself for. In my opinion, the
three biggest decisions he was forced to make in the book were whether or not to stay with
his father, whether or not to stay in the hospital, and whether to continue his relationship
with god.
In most people’s eyes, family is a very important thing. During the Holocaust, family was
the only physical thing that the Jews could hold onto. The famous quote, “Men to the left!
Women to the right!” forced Elie to make his first life altering decision. Those eight simple
words changed his outlook on family forever. As the time progressed life began to get
harder. Food became scarce, the beatings became more brutal and the heartache became
unbearable. It was time for Elie to make his decision. Was taking care of his dad really
worth it? Was it worth giving up his food and getting those extra beatings? In the end Elie
decided against giving up on his father. His dad was all he had left, and Elie would not lose
him without a fight. If Elie had left his father and his father died, he would never have
been able to forgive himself. He made the right decision in choosing not to leave his father.
