Debunking the Gender Wage Gap
For as long as this country has existed women’s contributions to society have always
been second to those of men, but when women account for over 50% of the labor force in 2014,
according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014), is it still appropriate to do so? No longer just
second class citizens, women across the country are on an uprising for parity. Over the past 40
years women’s educational progress has sky rocketed. Dominating education on all levels,
women outnumber men in their attainment of Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, and
Doctoral degrees (“Fifty Years”, 2013). Although some claim that the wage gap is no longer an
ongoing issue due to the Equal Pay Act of 1963 as well as the Fair Pay act of 2009, more serious
measures need to be taken to decrease this gap that still exists today and eventually eliminate it
