to the Senate?
She was inspired to run for office after leading a successful effort to stop the closure
of a local nursing home. She was first elected to the Ingham County Board of
Commissioners at twenty-four. After two years she was elected Chair of the Board.
Then she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives where she served
from 1979-1990 and then to the State Senate from 1991-1994. She represented
Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District in 1996.
