Debate over Immigration
United States of America has been battling for many years about if immigrations should be
allowed to enter the country. There has been several speeches about the pros and cons of
immigration restrictions. And still of many years of debating over this topic it is still as
relevant as it was many years ago. The supporters of the immigration restrictions fought to
keep immigrants out while the ones who disagree fought to make sure that immigrates
were allowed to be a part of the country. The key arguments in the debate of immigration
restrictions is the labor skills force, general education of the country, and many races
coming together, melting pot.
The first key argument over the debate of immigration restrictions is labor work force in
United States. The several people who are in favor of immigration restrictions in labor
work force believe that immigrates will come over and work for less pay. They believed
that can help destroyed the whole work force leaving hundreds of thousands of citizens out
of jobs.
“Many, if not most, of the evils which have resulted from the enormous and practically
unselected immigration of the past twenty-five years have been due to the reckless greed
for “cheap labor” on the part of large industrial, railroad and mining “interests” in this
country. These “interests” have set pocket book above patriotism”, acclaimed by Robert De
C. Ward, in his magazine article Some Thoughts on Immigration Restriction in October
1922.
Robert De C. Ward, gave the insight on how the country labor force can eventually
crumble because of cheap labor. He even gave mentions of examples like railroad work
force in this country, when Chinese immigrants help build railroads all over the California
for a little pay. However, the many people not in favor of immigration restrictions thought
that we need the extra help in the work force. And the idea that immigrates can come and
help out would benefit our country in the long run. W.B. Bailey wrote in his Birds of
Passage article in November 1912, “There will continue to be a demand for seasonal labor
in agriculture and construction in this country. This demand can best be met by single men,
who, unhampered by family ties, feel free to accept temporary employment. Most of these
laborers spend the winters in the cities where there is a continual surplus of unskilled
labor.” Bailey believed that we truly need help and we should want the help if someone
