DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was created in 1973 due to the threat drugs
imposed on America. These threats are still present in modern day America, and the DEA
continues to work hard to prevent and control drug related crime.
History
Federal drug enforcement began with the Bureau of Internal Revenue in 1915. As the
years progressed the responsibilities were passed between different agencies and finally came to
rest in the hands of the Bureau of Drug Abuse Control and the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in
1960. Prior to 1960, drug use was not an accepted behavior throughout the United States.
However in 1960 four million Americans had tried drugs. Though much less than today’s 74
