From this class I have learned that there are more then just two database programs. That
being said, the company I work for uses one of the more accessible ones, Microsoft SQL
Server 2000. Seeing this is for insurance the main uses of the database are for policy
creation, policies and written premium. Other uses are help request, change request, and
bug reports.
Every person that drives has some form of car insurance, or they should, in the form of an
insurance policy. In the case of the company I works for these policies have standard and
non-standard clauses in them. The database team has taken the forms and input them into
their SQL database. As underwriters create the policy they pick from a list of clauses to be
added. Weather it is a Terrorism clause, which is standard in all policies this company
writes, or water run off from a farm into municipal water supplies.
Policies are also stored on the server also for easy reference; This allows underwriters to
view claims history on policies they have written. They use this as a gauge to renew, or
rewrite a policy, in all cases this is used for writing new business. With the database they
are able to view written premium. Written premium is the amount of money the company
makes on the policy.
