1. Use an online application (like http://www.speedtest.net/) to determine your Internet
download and upload speed. (If you are asked to download or run a program, DO NOT
DO SO). Record your results.
2. Describe the physical equipment used to connect your home tablet or laptop to the
Internet. Include any communications hardware inside your laptop or tablet.
3. Describe in your own words the 5 layers of standards and the functions of each.
4. In general what is encapsulation? And specifically what is it in terms of data
communications and networking?
5. Convert the following 8 binary numbers to decimal and hexadecimal. (Do not use an
online converter).

6. Refer to the network below. Create a switching table (MAC address to PORT) for
SWITCH2. The table will have two columns, and will look similar to the table in figure
1-20 (page 24 of the book).
•The table must show all devices on the network.
•For each device use simplified MAC addresses (AA through DE).
•The devices are attached to ports 0-4 of each switch
MACs AA, BA,CA, DA are attached to port 0 of its corresponding switch
MACs AB, BB, CB, DB are attached to port 1 of its corresponding switch
MACs AC, BC, CC, DC are attached to port 2 of its corresponding switch
MACs AD, BD, DD are attached to port 3 of its corresponding switch
