The Mobius Strip of Avarice and Prodigality
Contrary to common thought, hell, in Dante’s perspec)ve, is not simply a place where those who
were wicked burn, but is a place where punishments vary based on the crime. Dante, the poet,
manipulates each circle of hell and twists them in a way that is not simply -.ng, but uncannily reffective
of the sin being punished. As he journeys across the fourth circle, Dante describes the punishment for
the sin of greed. Ironically, as people have a simpli-ed view of hell that is elaborated in The Inferno, the
can)cle also expands on greed as more than simply sel-sh desire and punishes it accordingly.
Greeted by the god of wealth before entering, it is a4rmed that this coming circle was created
to condemn those who have commit greed. Descending into the circle, Dante, as a pilgrim, encounters
those who are being punished immediately. He describes two dis)nct groups of people shoving weight
