“All hope abandon, ye who enter in!”1 When losing your path into darkness, one might
imagine what lies ahead through the gates of hell. Dante’s book the Inferno, describes a journey
into the thoughts and views of punishments accompanied by the sins that will ultimately land
individuals in what Dante sees as hell. Throughout the book Dante travels through the nine
circles of hell in order to get back on his path to his beloved Beatrice. Along the way Dante is
granted help from Virgil, who will guide him on his path, also observing those who are suffering
for their sins. Dante sees many faces of power who even though they had prevailed on earth,
their souls are sentence to suffer for their sins in Hell. System theory is clearly present in Dante’s
passage, which can be defined as an assemblage of interacting systems between human
population and the natural environment that obtain features of any given culture.2 In the Inferno,
Dante places a strong emphasis on the corruption and struggle of power and morals surrounding
him in his era with the use of the three system theories, social/political configuration, symbolic
