Cyber Bullying
Social network changed how children live their lives. A new study by Betsy Hammond
says that 78 percent of Americans aged 12 to 17 have cell phone; and that three-fourths of teens
access the Internet using mobile devices such as smart phones or tablets. Due to technological
advances of the new era, many companies manufacture new electronics for media and
socializing; making contacting friends or families much easier than in the past. Research shows
some pros and cons connected with the cyber world. The ability to communicate with anyone at
any time enables cyber bullying to occur. According to Cyberbullying statistics, “more than one
in three young people have experienced cyber threats online.” (TAL Global). Anyone can
become a victim of cyber bullying; it just takes one person with a desire to hurt the feelings of
others. Cyberbullying is found in many forms, such as sharing embarrassing or private
information about a person against their will. It is very unfortunate that cyberbullying exists, but
there are many ways of preventing and stopping it from happening. Parents, schools and even the
police are trying to respond and fix this problem through various methods. Overall the Internet is
very helpful and useful, but it can cause many problems.
According to dictionary.com, the definition of cyberbullying is “the act of harassing
someone online by sending or posting mean messages, usually anonymously.” Basically, cyber
bullying is when people tease using social networks. It is done by people posting private pictures
of others that they do not want shown to the public, hurtful messages sent anonymously, or
purposely ignoring a message or post the person has posted to prove to that person that no one
cares about their opinion. Cyber bullying is popular among teenagers and especially high school
students, but many adults participate in cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can be done anytime and
anywhere with access to the internet. It is not uncommon for cyber bullying to continue for a
long time; anyone with their information online is susceptible to cyberbullying. “Girls are about
twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.”(Lon) Girls tend to be
more emotional than boys. The pressure of popularity, looks, and self-consciousness can
sometimes be overwhelming among young women, leading to increased competition and
problems with their surrounding peers. We tend to have different ways of handling situations. In
conclusion, the internet is not a safe place to have private things, it just makes it that much easier
for cyberbullying to occur.

From Dooley’s article “Cyberbullying Versus Face-to-Face Bullying” it starts off talking
about awful cases of teen. Their suicide that has become a large inspection on the media. And the
nature of cyberbullying has been caused because of the media attention relatively little. The
author observes, “This is, at least in part, due to a lack of theoretical and conceptual clarity and
an examination of the similarities and differences between cyberbullying and face-to-face
bullying.” He used some ways as comparing and contrasting individual factors shared to cyber

and face-to-face bullying. Also, this article treats those who involved in cyberbullying or face-to-
face bulling behaviors as two different groups that acknowledge of the evidence indicating the
similarity between them. Lastly, the author mentions some keywords such as repetition and
power imbalance. Clearly any bullying is abhorrent to our feelings, but the focus on high-profile
cyberbullying attacks frequently disregards the real life bullying that goes on in schools around
the world. As any social problem, news organizations love headlines about “new” forms of
bullying and officials are even trying to legislate it. What really needs to be fixed are the systems
in place which designed to react and avert bullying in the first place.
