Review B: Cuts in The Ring
In the movie Million Dollar Baby Clint Eastwood uses classical cutting, cutting to
continuity, and sequence shots in a way that aids a lot in building relationships between
characters. Towards the beginning of the movie in the scene when Frankie finally agrees to train
Maggie there is a lot of classical cutting being used. This scene uses both two shots and a series
of reaction shots to convey emotion between the characters and show their relationship. There
are many similar scenes throughout the movie the show the relationship of Maggie and Frankie
and how it grows.
Eastwood also uses a sequence shot at the very beginning of the show. When Frankie is
praying a sequence shot is used at a medium distance. This type of shot is used so the viewer can
completely focus on the words that Frankie says. It also allows the viewer to focus on the
