Abstract
This paper will review and evaluate current and future approaches to cost containment in the
United States as well as how it will trend in the future. This paper also indicates the role of the
ACA will play. At one time managed care was an effective means of supporting health care
quality and keeping down the costs in this country. Recently payors have looked in other areas.
The reason being the idea of limiting cost has all but faded away. Today’s consumer driven
health plans have been on the rise.
The Future of Managed Care
The development of health care policy is being influenced because of the cost
considerations. Improvement in health science and the delivery of care continue to broaden the
ability of treatments. Whether or not countries can pay the cost for this type of care from their
resources is a subject that is regular discussed. What is intriguing to me is that Europe has greater
capacity and higher utilization of services than the United States, but yet still, we as Americans
are paying much more for these same services. The United States as well as Europe has to deal
with the economic strain on the economy while trying to provide adequate health care programs.

In recent years the United States has had to deal with significant economic challenges.
