Site Selection
Choose a part of the farm that is slightly elevated and has good drainage to avoid water
logging in case a flash flood occurs during the wet season. For dry season planting,
make a catchment with a canal directed into it to drain excess water after each irrigation
schedule.
Land Preparation
Ploughing (or digging) is necessary to prepare the land for a new crop. It improves the
structure and water holding capacity. In areas where water is a limiting factor, ploughing
enhances water conservation as well. Fallow ploughing the land after harvesting the
previous crop im-proves the soil structure and water-holding capacity. It also helps to
reduce soil-borne pests and diseases by exposing the soil to the hot sun. Deep
ploughing is necessary to break an impermeable hard sub-soil layer (ploughing pan),
