Chapter 1: Culture of secrecy
In some cultures, a “culture of secrecy” or manipulation of the news is tolerated more than others. How
can this be remedied by other governments, corporations, investors, and members of the public?
Most cultures are based on a set of traditions and local history. They are manipulated by the
ruling class in order to #t their beliefs and needs. In many cases these cultural norms are detrimental to
the welfare of societies. Many cultures frame honesty and respect as core aspects of the culture.
However, in reality these aspects are rare in most cultures.
Asian cultures have been known to avoid the truth in order to circumvent confrontation when
things have gone wrong. This policy might be #ne for social aspects, but in terms of real world situations
this policy is terrible. Allowing incompetence to continue and &ourish. Ultimately leading to signiticant
consequences. This policy has to come to an end if many on the cultures in Asia are capable of moving
forward.
This issue is not just a problem in Asia and the Eastern Hemisphere, in the west it has caused its
own problems. In the United States we have seen how secrecy and manipulation have caused major
harm to our nation. Looking at the Enron case, information was hidden from stakeholders, allowing the
leadership to take on even more risk. When the truth came to light, the organization, thousands of jobs
