Cultural Creation Breakdown #4
This week for my cultural creation I decided to compare the similarities between the artwork of
the Rebirth of Naturalism’s era and the Gothic era’s architectural concepts. The reason why I chose to
compare these two is because of the obvious similarities they show toward each other. The architectural
concept of the gothic era is shown in many painted pieces I’ve seen that are from the era of naturalism.
Things like pinnacles, aisle windows, piers, and transept spires are just a few for example. Both kinds of
work are incredibly detailed and show a great appreciation to the church. I don’t believe there was a
way other than how I depicted the Amiens Cathedral that could’ve shown anymore of the similarity
between the two types. I first started to notice when looking at paintings like Giotto di Bondone which is
a painting which shows a baby Jesus on the lap of Mary on a thrown of some sort which shares the
designs of gothic architecture. Some of the things I listed like aisle windows, piers, and transept spires
were just things I automatically noticed after becoming familiar with them.
I believe that this was one of the more challenging creations I’ve had to explain using what I
have seen in the chapter. I think that with the two having the similarities they share it makes it easy to
construct an idea from one that has already been created but shows both styles. I also believe these
styles are related to modern culture and mine in many ways beyond how I can try to validate for.
