Literary Narrative
A four year old me vacationing and visiting our family in Cuba would’ve never
understood the impact on my life that my grandpa Andy set forth during one of those typical
“antes de ir a jugar, termine sus tareas” (work before play) speeches, which were coming more
than frequently since it was September and I was entering kindergarten soon, to illustrate how
uneventful this moment seemed to my four year old mind, I was helping him clean the above
ground pool and abuelo Andy was already taking 15 minutes longer than the short 5 minutes he
promised it’d take. “Aguanta esto” (hold this), he said while holding the tip of the hose just
under the surface of the water, without any warning, my grandpa briskly speed walks to the other
side of the hose and starts madly sucking on the hose until water shoots out of the tip just nearly
