Can Cubans on Both Shores Finally Come Together?
Walk into any Cuban restaurant and the topic you will always over hear is “los Castros
estos han jodido a Cuba,” basically the Castro regime has ruined Cuba .The Cuban American
relations have been frozen for over 53 years, due to the differences in ideologies, but in this
past year president Obama has given the Cuban people a new dream to look forward too. The
unfreezing of these relations. The problem lies in that to some this might be a dream but to
others, this is the stuff of nightmares. For the first time in more than half century Cubans of
both shores will have to come together to think if they value more the thought of reunification
between the two nations, or is the hatred for the Castro regime is too intense for them to come
together? Can these exiles’ pain be so much to as blind their judgment? Cubans need to put
their hatred aside and see the bigger picture such as: families reunifying and Cuba
progressing to a newer era of freedom. What will this mean to Cubans? How will this affect
the embargo? Will it be lifted or will it remain? Does this mean a new economic outlook for
Cuba? Is the United States gaining a new ally or an old friend? This issue was brought up in
2014 and it still making news, for example the opening of a Cuban Embassy here in the
United States and an American Embassy in Havana. I would like to conduct a survey of a
group of different generations of Cubans to see how their opinions differ from one another. I
would also like to interview a person who has suffered the great injustices of the Cuban
government. Also, I will be using an article of WLRN about the opening of the embassies in
Cuba and the United States. Moreover, my last source will be a book that analyzes the
relations between Cuba and the United States from the late 40s to the early 60s. As can be
seen this exploratory paper will examine the effects that the opening of relations of Cuba and
the United States will have on the Cuban population on both shores and what the exile
community has to say about it..
Prior to going in depth on how Cuba and the United States should reestablished their
relations, I must first learn how their relations were before and during the Castro regime. I
