What does Africa mean to me?
The continent of Africa is the world's second largest continent after Asia. Africa has 54
independent countries, 48 mainland and 6 island states with a population of 700 million.
Africa is also considered the world’s hottest and second driest continent. Africa is home
to over 1 billion people who speak over 1,500 different languages. It is also the
homeland of many species of animals. One in every four of the world’s language are
spoken only in Africa. Longest river in the world, “the Nile River” is located in Africa.
Long before humans were around, Africa was joined to the other continents in a
massive continent called Pangaea. Over millions of years this continent became what
we know of it today.
A huge event that has taken place in Africa is The Great Migration. The Great
Migration is the largest overland migration in the world. The animals travel a total of
800km or more during each cycle. During the migration around 250,000 wildebeest and
30,000 zebra are killed off every year as a result of predation by carnivores but also
from thirst, hunger, and exhaustion.
The slave trade had many effects on Africa and its people. The negative impact of the
international slave trade on Africa was immense. It can be seen on the personal, family,
communal, and continental levels. In addition to the millions of able-bodied individuals
