The vintage masterpiece the Arnolfini Portrait is an oil painting created in 1434 by the
artist Jan Van Eyck. The medium of this portrait was created with the use of oil paints and the
main meaning of this work of art in my opinion is to display unity, marriage, and faithfulness.
This painting exemplifies symbolism and uses various elements and principles. Some of the
subject matter that I would like to point out is the mirror that stands out in the background
between the man and the woman. If you look closely, you see two men entering into the
doorway. Because of the signature placed above the mirror, it is believed by many people that
one of these men is actually Jan Van Eyck himself. I also believe there is a purpose for the
reflection in the round mirror, which is assumed to be present to show the other participants in
the room. It is also acceptable to note that the woman is holding her dress up against her belly
