SUMMARY
Tourism is the largest source of jobs in the private sector in Barbados and crime has a
negative impact on this sector. Leaving such a pressing matter unchecked could cause tourists to
gravitate to other travel destinations which they deem to be safer. It also has the potential to
decrease the number of persons employed in the Tourism sector. Moreover, not addressing this
scourge can result in a reduction in the amount of revenue which can be generated in this sector to
contribute to the Barbados Economy. The utilization of the tourist police can effectively mitigate
the scourge. Police authorities in New Orleans, the Dominican Republic and Malaysia have set up
these special units and have trained selected personnel to deal specifically with tourist related
matters. The usage of the tourist police has been successful in combatting the issue in the
previously mentioned locations and continues to keep visitors safe.

AGAINST/INVOLVING TOURISTS IN BARBADOS
INTRODUCTION
Every violent act of crime compromises the image of the country, which could potentially
decrease the inflow of finances from the Tourism sector. The main cause of crime against tourists
is greed. Tourists are targeted because people want what they perceive the tourists have – which,
they anticipate, would improve their personal situation. Barbados has introduced different policies
and programs to reduce the level of crime (both violent and non-violent) involving tourists.
However, the strategies implemented in Barbados have not worked well, hence the need to find
one that is more effective. The solution or strategy that has been effectively implemented overseas
is a preventative measure: specialized units made up of trained police officers, whose sole
responsibility is the protection and assistance of domestic and international tourists. These law
enforcement agencies would take their role seriously and be committed to preventing and reducing
crimes against tourists.

Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to promote a solution to effectively and permanently
rectify the issue of crime against tourists in Barbados.
Scope
Throughout this proposal, I have outlined the problem and consequences of crimes
against/involving tourists in Barbados. The suggested implementation of specialized units made
up of trained police officers would assist in decreasing the level of such crimes against tourists.
