Creation of the Newspaper
In American History
The newspaper commenced in Europe, way before it came to America. Originally, in
colonial America, newspapers were printed one copy at a time manually, and there was no
expectation of unbiased and truthful reporting. The first newspaper was printed in Boston, in
1690, however it was closed by the puritans because of its offensive headline. It was believed
that a newspaper had to have royal consent, in this case, from England. In effect, the Boston
Newsletter was born. This paper had royal permission, but was considered dull and mostly
printed European stories. At the time, it had 300 subscribers.
After a few years, Benjamin Franklin’s brother, James Franklin, creates the New England
Courant newspaper in Boston. Because the paper had no royal consent, it is closed and he is sent
to jail. By this, Benjamin Franklin becomes the new publisher of this paper, moves it to
Philadelphia and re-names it the Pennsylvania Gazette. The paper introduces: headlines, legible
