Subordinate goals are worth completing but required two or more social groups to
cooperatively achieve something in common. In the final phase of the experiment, the measure
that proved effective in reducing stress between groups was the introduction of goals that were
shared by members of the groups which required collaborative efforts from everyone.
However, this approach has been applied in many contexts to reduce intergroup conflict,
including in classrooms and business organizations. The method of producing groups from
unacquainted individuals with a similar background was to introduce a problem situation in
which the attainment of the goal depended on the coordinated activity of all individuals.
My favorite part from the experiment is the context of realistic conflict theory,
subordinate goals are most frequently discussed, which implies that most intergroup conflicts
stem from a battle over scarce resources, especially in circumstances that are seen as zero-sum.
