Primary Cause by NTSB
On July 31, 1997, around 0132 eastern light time, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11,
N611FE, worked by Federal Express, Inc., (FedEx) as flight 14, had an accident while arriving
on runway 22R at Newark International Airport (EWR), Newark, New Jersey. The routinely
planned payload flight began in Singapore on July 30 with transitional stops in Penang,
Malaysia; Taipei, Taiwan; and Anchorage, Alaska. The departure from Anchorage International
Airport (ANC), Anchorage, Alaska, to EWR was led on an instrument flight, rules flight plan
and worked under 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 121. As indicated by the National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), this present mishap’s reasonable justification was the
captain’s over control of the plane during the landing and his inability to execute a go-around
