Know the facts
A case of rape was surfaced when a girl’s aunt reported it to the authorities (Lee &
Vanar, 2013, para 11). The man who charged for the case is a 40-year-old restaurant manager,
Riduan Masmud. Besides that, the girl who was allegedly raped is minor. It was also made
known that Riduan had married the girl legally before the trial.
Factual perspective
The girl’s father explained that it was for the best interests of his daughter. It was
reported that the deputy public prosecutor, Mr Chaw Siang Kong, needed more time to
reassess the case as it involves high public concerns (Lee & Vanar, 2013, para 19). Riduan
Masmud has mentioned that the marriage was of a mutual consent which is acceptable in the
eyes of the Syriah Law (Lee, 2013, para 21).
Under the Syriah Law, also known as the Islamic Laws, the marriage of Riduan and
the girl is considered valid under various reasons such as (Ayatullah, n.d.): receiving
blessings from the current wife; receiving blessings from the bride’s father; when the girl
reaches the age of bulugh (ready for marriage; when first period occurs); the financial ability
