In regards to social responsibility, Freeman and Friedman have opposing thoughts and
opinions on the role of businesses. Freeman poses the theory of the stakeholder. He directs
his opinion that the social responsibility goals of the business should come from all
stakeholders. Friedman claims that only the shareholders or owners of the business have social
responsibility. Though both of these guys have very valid points, I think that I lean more toward
Friedman’s view.
Freeman identifies a stakeholder as management, owners, suppliers, employees,
customers, and the local community. This is a large group to try and get consensus when
making business decisions regarding social responsibility. I also think that the concept itself of
making decisions based on what each of these groups would want is very complex and would
