1.0 Background, Purpose, and Focus
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus causing a
current pandemic around the world. COVID-19 causes respiratory illness with symptoms such as
cough, fever, difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently,
avoiding touching your face and by practicing social distancing. COVID-19 spreads primarily
through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a
person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.
Specific to the United States, as of May 14, 2020 there have been a total of 1,364,061 confirmed
cases and 82,246 deaths (CDC 2020).
The purpose of this initiative is to reduce the number of deaths related to COVID-19. The
focus is on increasing the awareness on properly washing hands (wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry)
for at least 20 seconds and often during and after exercising social distancing will significantly
help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
