Cornucopian vs Cassandra
I would consider myself to be more on the Cassandra side. Grew up in a very
conservative family and both of my parents are very much on the Cornucopian side and don’t
believe in global warming or climate change. It wasn’t until I got into college that my
perspective really changed. I’ve taken science classes and seen the evidence. I had a sociology
teacher that said that she will have her opinions but then if irrefutable science proves her
wrong then she has to change her opinion. Otherwise she is not a scientist, she is a fool. I really
took on that mindset, I can have my opinions but if 99 out of 100 scientists, that have degrees
and study what they are talking about, say that I am wrong then I must be wrong. I understand
that people have livelihoods that depend on certain industries like logging, but I think there are
responsible ways to go about it. Plant a tree for every one that gets cut down and do it in a way
that doesn’t deforest all the land. It can be hard to listen to my parents talk about certain things
about the environment when there is proof that contradicts everything they are saying but I
think older generations will never change their minds, you can’t really teach and old dog new
tricks and their opinions will never change.
I think everyone would be better off if they lied somewhere between the neutral point
and Cassandra on the spectrum because they would have a certain level of respect and
understanding for the environment but they might also have their own opinions on logging and
farming. Not everyone needs to be vegetarian but I think it’s ridiculous that people deny
climate change when our world is literally falling apart because mass deforestation, pollution in
oceans and an overall “screw it” attitude. I think differing attitudes can be okay as long as it lies
in reason. The people that disregard the fact that we need to take care of the environment if
we want it to continue to take care of us, are usually the ones that destroy the environment the
most. We can’t continue to use up everything because it just isn’t sustainable.
