Based on the what I accumulated from reading the text on coping methods in regards to myself
and what I have been dealing with due to the weather challenges that we recently had. I will say that
thankfully I did not have a bad experience due to the tragic weather we had compared to some of my
coworkers and friends.
When it comes to managing to balance work, life, and school in my current life as of now I will
say that it is a challenge. While dealing with depression since a teenager in high school I must say that I
have improved a lot over the past year. Ways that I dealt with coping and still have issues with as of
today would be avoidant coping and emotion focused coping. I never knew of the different methods of
coping until I read this chapter because I never went to get help or told anyone what was you going on
with me. I just shut down and figured out ways to avoid talking or expressing my issues because I felt
that no one cared or the big thing in African American families would be to either not discuss what was
going on with you because “nothing is wrong with you” or “you have plenty to be thankful for, nothing
should be wrong with you” just a few things I constantly heard over the years from my family.
While feeling like things are just turning into crap or if I feel attacked over whatever I usually
would just pretend like nothing was going on or hide it and throw it to the back of my mind and forget
about it for the time being. With emotion focused coping in order to get by and get things done,
especially if I felt extremely stressed and felt backed into a corner. I would in a way turn off having
feelings of caring and worrying about others and what they had going on in their lives. Whether good or
bad; if they needed help knowing that I could be of assistance, but decided not to because I wanted to
be focused on my daughter and myself. Along with trying to get out of being depressed.
