Coping Styles and Self-Improvement
Experts have affirmed that eating habits are greatly influenced by cultural, evolutionary, social, familial
and individual factors. I was overweight due to the retrogressive dietary habits such as eating fast foods
instead of healthy balanced diet; in response, I formulated coping mechanisms that I believed at the time
were justifiable with regard to my dietary issues. The first coping mechanism I opted for was denial. With
respect to coping mechanism, an individual refuses to acknowledge there is a problem and as such refuses
to seek medical assistance. Another mechanism that I employed in my situation was ascribing blame.
Ascribing blame means to blame other people for your own mistakes and decisions (Falvo). In my case I
blamed my family members for not doing enough to help me when I was younger, I accused them for
