Planning is meaningless without controlling and controlling is blind without planning
(Singla, 2012). When an organization makes a long term plan, actually it deals with a lot of
uncertainties about the future. Later on, how can it be ascertained whether the plan is
success or
all of the objectives have been met. This can be answered only by implementing the
controlling
function. Controlling function plays a significant role to achieve organization’s long term
goals.
This paper will discuss the reasons why controlling is important and how it helps achieve
long-
term goals.
A good planning does not guarantee a good result will be achieved. On this rapidly
changing environment, many unforeseen events could make a good planning fails. A
failure
to achieve the organization’s goal, however, could also occur due to a poor execution.
There
controlling is needed to prevent this failure. Controlling is the process of monitoring,
comparing,
and correcting work performance. It is important because it is the only way that managers
know
whether organization met the goals, and if not, the reasons why (Robbins, 2012).
The controlling function involves some steps to be implemented. These are four key steps
in control process (CliffNotes, 2014):
1. Establish objectives and standards to measure performance
When an organization arrange their strategic plan, managers define the key results that
they
want to accomplish. This key results are called objectives. After the objectives are defined,
then they set the standards to measure the performance results.
2. Measures actual performance
An effective control need appropriate measurements. It means that the measurements
should
be related with the standards. For example is a cable television provider, if the customer
