Illegal Immigration Crisis.
To an American, illegal immigration is a subject that is no stranger. Every time there are
news of issues concerning illegal immigration being debated by politicians, broadcasting services
and televisions. Many around the world refer to America as an immigrant’s land, sometimes
termed as “the melting pot”; while this is a fact, illegal immigration is a subject of interest to
everyone that lives in America.
In the article “Illegal Immigration Threatens America” written by Ted Hayes, the author
tries to show why he believes illegal immigration threatens America. In his first point, Hayes
says that the illegal immigrants that enter the US harm the American economy by using up the
social services and taking over jobs that the citizens and legal immigrants would do, rendering
the natives jobless. Hayes also argues that the illegal immigrants pay little or no taxes at all and
therefore end up using the government money without returning anything back to the economy
causing failure of the economy. He also argues that according to the U.S. Immigration and
Naturalization Service (INS), California, a state mostly affected by the crisis uses more than $4
billion annually in sustaining illegal immigrants entering the border from Mexico (18).
Next, Ted Hayes expresses his opinion that the illegal immigrants threaten American culture
and erode the cultures by refusing to assimilate. Instead of assimilating they maintain a foreign
culture and identity. He argues that the immigrants assimilate slowly or not at all and therefore
affect the normal process of political assimilation. Ted argues that many immigrants do not learn

English or even try to be part of America despite living and working in different areas of
America. This influences the political balance and affects the American culture as the number of
immigrants continues growing daily and undermines the practices, cultures and beliefs of the
“native American”.
Finally, Ted argues that illegal immigrants threaten America’s sovereignty because America
continues losing control over the people who cross the border. He says that the borders of
California, and Arizona see thousands of immigrants crossing through each day since the borders
are undermanned. Agua Prieta, Mexico just across Rio Grande is the largest staging for illegal
immigration into the U.S. anywhere along the border. Over 1000 illegals cross into the U.S.
every night of the year (20). Ted also says that the control is lost due to factors such as the
Mexican government openly supporting migration into the U.S. since it benefits from the money
