Clarissa Moodley Essay Assignment 3
Although one person possess the "violent" gene. It does not determine if a person will become violent
or not. Violent behavior is learned and therefore a natural part of who we are.
Violence is a learned behavior and stems from a variety of sources. Violence can be in the form of
mental abuse or physical contact. You can learn to control your violent rage by portraying a "nice
person" outlook or demonstrating your violent acts. It is a choice.Research shows that it would be much
easier to figure out if we had the "violent" gene known as the MAOA gene, but unfortunately we would
have to undergo brain analysis. Dr. Jim Fallon, a 62 year old neuroscientist who Dan Jones writes about
in his article, "What's on Jim Fallon's mind? A family secret that has been murder to figure out."
Underwent said brain analysis. From Dr Fallons research, we learn that a high risk version (of the gene)
can lead to a build-up in the brain which could cause the brain to become less responsive to the calming
effects of the hormone. Suprisingly, Dr Fallon ha dfound that he had inherited the gene. However he did
not become a violent person because, according to him, he had a "charmed childhood". From this, we
can conclude that just because one may be born with the "warrior gene", it does not necessarily mean
they are going to act out violently. Maybe there are others like him who chose to conceal this type of
erratic behavior by choosing to be good, thus preventing the gene from manifesting within them.
We also learn about the contributing factors that teaches us to be violent or that causes us to become
aggressive towards others. We turn to any form of violence when we are constantly exposed to certain
experiences or other sources.
Mention Hitler.
