Conceptual Framework in Action
My junior year of high school, I was enrolled in a year-long AP U. S. History class. To
this date, the most memorable aspect of this class is how excluded I felt. The class was mostly
Caucasian, with only 3 students in my class sharing the same cultural background as me; my
teacher was also Caucasian. The exclusion did not come from my peers, as the nature of my
school was very inclusive of all cultures. This feeling of exclusion was from my teacher. Often
times, I felt as though my voice was not heard, my input was not valued, and that my
contribution to the classroom was not as important as that of my peers. Before this experience, I
was unsure what career path I wanted to embark on. After this experience, I was sure I wanted to
be an educator; one who made sure every learner felt welcome and valued.
