Chemical Properties of soap, through the synthesis of Chemistry, this is a lab portion
from a class at a university, it entails basis concepts on how to create soap with
chemical compounds. I hope whoever will use this will appreciate the use this is a
outline of a lecture for the class C-127, please use it responsibly. I hope that it can guide
individuals who wish to either make soap or who are interested in Chemistry.
Synthesis and Properties of Soap
—————Learning Goals
-Understand how intermolecular forces relate to the properties of soap
-Understand the nature of a micelle and why they form in soap solutions
-Know the difference between a soap and a detergent
-prepare solutions and perform a chemical reaction
——————Safety
-Wear goggles at all times.
use caution when heating to prevent burns
NaOH is corrosive. Wear gloves
Water Disposal
Leftover ethanol should be put in the organic waste bottle.
Leftover NaOH and your soap should be put in the solid waste jar
The filtrate left in the suction flask can be disposed of down the drain
Extra solid NaCl may be put in the regular trash
Rinse contents of test tubes used for testing soap properties down drain and then
dispose of test tubes in a bucket, or clean and return.
