ACCT207 – Complete Payroll Essay
I have always enjoyed working with a number, that is why I chose to return to college and pursue my dream of
getting my accounting degree. I have learned so much this past year here at Bryant and Stratton College.
I had no clue what it entailed to do payroll. I just thought that someone inputs the employee’s name into a
computer and the hours he or she worked and ta-da it was done they had a paycheck.
I have learned about FICA, FIT, SUTA, FUTA and so much more. Learning how to figure out taxes, the rate for
withholding and what the employee has to pay out of his paycheck to the government as well as what the
employer is responsible was a bit overwhelming, but I am glad that I took the class and I was able to complete
the payroll process. It makes me think that doing payroll by hand is a lot of work, but it is also very rewarding.
I have spent approximately 40 hours on the complete payroll assignment. I would work it and then go back and
rework it making sure that I did not have any errors that I could see. I am sure that it is not perfect but I feel
that I have done my best and I am proud that I completed it.
A manual payroll system is performed entirely by hand, whereas a computerized payroll system allows a
company to process its payroll via dedicated payroll software. A manual system can result in payroll errors and is
usually a slow, laborious process. Computerized systems offer some advantages, including increased accuracy
and speed.
Many employers use a timekeeping system, such as time clock, to track employees’ work hours. A manual
system requires tracking employee time by hand, but a computerized payroll system can automatically transmit
employee entries from the timekeeping system into the payroll system. Such a system can separate regular
hours from overtime hours worked, although employees may occasionally need to make adjustments.
A computerized payroll system automatically calculates statutory employee deductions, such as taxes and wage
